Located 70 km north of Port Elizabeth, Addo Elephant National Park is Africa's third largest national reserve. As its name suggests, it is a sanctuary for one of the densest African Elephant populations on earth. The park was prochaimed in 1913 and, at this time, it was a home to only 16 elephants. Today, there is more than 500 elephants in Addo ! Therefor there is no way you will miss this big and magestic mammel during your safari. Addo Elephant is also a home to many other animals : zebras, buffaloes, leopards, lions and different species of anteloppes and birds. A day in Addo Elephant National Park is a magical experience that you can't miss if you are visiting Eastern Cape. The park is really accessible and you can cover most of it in one day in a self-safari and spot many animals.

SELF DRIVE SAFARI

We spend a full day in Addo Elephant National Park, from the opening hour to the last minute allowed ! We did a self-safari with our rented car and it was one of our most amazing experiences in South Africa. We started our safari with a breathtaking view on a sunset revealing itself between the hills of the park. We saw so many elephants we couldn't count them. During all the safari, you follow their daily routine and learn so much about their collective behaviour. We also saw dozens of zebras, many warthogs (pumpa), black-backed jackals, kudus and other anteloppes. However, we didn't see any lions or leopards. You need a lot of luck to spot these predators. The good point of doing an organized safari is that you have more chance to see these animals because the ranger has updated information about the location of some animals. Anyway, it's a real adventure to do your own safari. You found yourself trakking the animals like a real ranger on the sit of your car with your binocular. Exciting moments happen every minutes and the feeling of freedom given by being alone in the middle of this wildlife is indescribable.
