OUR EXPERIENCE IN BLYDE RIVER CANYON

We drove from Bourke's Luck Potholes (Blyde River Canyon) to Saint Lucia. It is around 700km and  it took us more than 10 hours drive because of the numerous potholes in Mpumalanga. On the way, we did a stop to sleep in Machadodorp (a city where there is absolutly nothing to see, but a good alternative to cut the road in two).

We spent 5 days and 4 nights in Saint Lucia. Knowing all the attractions and activities you can find in the area, you can easily stay longer. For us, five days was enough to experience 3 types of safari, having one or two walks and enjoying the nature resting on the beach or snorkelling.

We rented a flat in the "Manzini Chalets" in Mackenzie street (St. Lucia) and it was the best accomodation we had in South Africa : good value for money, wonderfull surroundings, strategic location and well equiped appartment. We rented the flat through Airbnb and we payed 550 ZAR (35€) for a night. It was actually one of the most expensive accomodation we payed for in South Africa, but considering the value for money and the touristic aspect of St. Lucia, it was actually a good deal ! All the flat in Manzini have different prices : every flat belongs to different owners, who can choose the equipments of the chalet and his own price for it.

Manzini Chalets is on the edge of the Lake Saint Lucia and counts a dozens of appartments. The garden is wonderfull, with a beautiful wooden sitting area, and there is even a swimming pool. Each chalet has its own barbecue, its own balcony, and all the home appliance needed, We felt very welcomed and got a lot of touristic information from the office desk of the place.

Bordering the estuary, hippos can be sometimes seen in the garden ! If you don't have the chance to see a hippo while you are taking a breakfast on your balcony, don't worry you will at least be satisfied by the dozens of velvet monkeys ! There is many of them in Manzini Chalets, on the roof, on the trees and sometimes even in your own chalet (pay attention your door is always closed, they love to come to steal few of our stuff).
